One of the Oldest In Scotland, Bowmore Distillery Was Established In 1779 By Local Merchant David Simson. The Distillery Was Later Taken Over By James Mutter And His Family. The Family Kept

The Distillery Until 1887 When It Was Sold To John Sherriff of Campbeltown And Became Sherriff's Bowmore Distillery Ltd. In 1950 Bowmore Was Purchased By William Grigor & Sons Ltd. From Invernes.

Age

In 1963 The Distillery Was Acquired By Stanley P. Morrison.The Distillery Today Is Owned By Morrison Bowmore Distillers. After Having Been Part-Owned By Suntory Ltd of Japan For Some Years,

Distilled

Morrison Bowmore Was Purchased Outright By Suntory In 1994. Bowmore Still Has Its Own Maltings, Although The Three Malt Floors Only Produce About A Third of All The Malted Barley That Bowmore Needs.

Size

The Rest Is Produced At The Nearby Port Ellen Maltings.

Proof

Malted Barley Is Broken Before It is Dried Over A Very Smoky Fire, Which May Account For The Fact That Modern Day Bowmores Tend To Be Predominantly Smoky.

Notes

During WWII The RAF Used This Distillery As The Flying Head Quarters to 3 Squadrons of Flying Boats.Water Source : Laggan River.
