-Whisky- Distillery SPEYBURN DISTILLERY PROFILE Type 1897 Distillery Established By John Hopkins & Co Speyburn Single Malt Scotch Whisky Was First Produced On The 15th December 1897. The Distillery Was Built From Carved Stone Taken From The Former Bed Region of fhe River Spey. When Production First Started, The Still House Has Not Yet Been Fitted With Windows Or Doors; And As A Fierce Snowstorm Was Sweeping Through The Valley The Men Had To Work Age In Overcoats. The Distillers Were Anxious To Have Some Casks Filled BThe Date 1897 Because This Was The Diamond Jubilee Year of Queen Victoria - Just One Butt Was Bonded. Speyburn Was Distilled The First Scottish Malt Distillery To Install A Stream-Driven Mechanical Malting System. The Distillery Is Know as ' The Gibbet' Because of Its Situation Near The Ancient ' Cnock na Croiche' Size Or Hillock of The Gibbet'. The First Manager Was Mr John Smith Who Held His Position For 31 Years. 1950's A Tractor Replaced The Distillery Horse And Cart . 1962 Speyburn's Two Stills Were Converted Proof To Internal Heating By Steam From A Coal Fired Boiler. 1992 Speyburn 10 Year Old Was Launched By Inver House .Water Source: Granty Burn .
